Rio Tinto and BHP end planned JV
Thursday, 21 October 2010
Rio Tinto and BHP decided on 18 October to end plans for an iron ore production joint venture in the Pilbara. Both parties were recently advised that the proposal would not be approved in its current form by the European Commission, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, Japan Fair Trade Commission, Korea Fair Trade Commission or the German Federal Cartel Office. CEG Asia Pacific advised a number of Japanese steel mills in relation to competition investigations with the clients noting that CEG's analysis had played a significant role not only in Australia but also before the European Commission.
